  • Judge's Critique: Great idea that falls short due to exposure and compensation. With few exceptions, first rule of digital photography – expose for the highlights. Nothing wrecks an image like blown-out details and color. See the little girl’s pink hat and path she is walking on. Once detail is gone it cannot be recovered (without extreme processing). The grasses are also over exposed. This seems to be a midday shot and it is important to remember, again with a few exceptions, midday light is the hottest least flattering light for photography. I have been told “that was the only light available at that time”. Perhaps, but then that is not an image suitable for a competition. A friend, family member, or cute model with a little girl peaking through the waterfall isn’t enough for a successful image. A slightly tighter crop and exposing for the highlights (underexposing from the meter reading) would have made this a more dynamic image.
