  • DESCRIPTION AND SETTINGS : This tomato marches to a beat of a different drum. I liked his style. So I took his picture.
  • Judge's Critique: Not sure what to say about this shot. It is clearly staged (set up), and the photographer made decisions with regards to position, lighting, and background, but the image, as it is falls short. Don’t miss understand me, staging a still life shot is not a bad thing. Taking the time to try different lighting, set up, compositions, etc… could have rewarded the photographer with a spectacular and simply stated photograph. As presented, the background seems muddy (especially at the corners) and does not compliment the red subject. Reminiscent of Edward Weston’s Pepper No. 30, it may have been interesting to see in monochrome and/or maybe a tighter crop. Other ideas may have been hi-key, lo-key, or possibly using a contrasting or complimentary background color.
