Spring in the Everglades

Spring in the Everglades

  • DESCRIPTION AND SETTINGS : Taken with a Nikon D 810 F 8, SS 1/125 ISO 400 35mm.
  • Judge's Critique: I know this area and have shot it often, so I know the draw and challenges to photograph. A location like this (may be the same) ended up in my book, Everglades National Park – A Photographic Destination (and yes that is a shameless plug). The key to an image like this is to find a way to emphasize, both the depth of field and quantity of the Everglades Daisy blooms. I typically shoot and prefer esthetically, a shallow depth of field, but this kind of scene demands a great depth of field. Notice how the flowers are soft in the foreground. Also notice the long out of focus blade of grass near the upper right quadrant of the image. The sky is also less than dramatic and does not help the image. Try this again, only get higher and shoot down on the blooms including those in the distance and try to diminish or leave out the sky. Use a small aperture or try focus stacking for great depth of field. (don’t tell anyone but I gave you an extra point for walking in and attempting this shot. I don’t care if they fire me)
