Flying Free

Flying Free
  • Contest: Signs of Spring
  • Submitted by: Doris Kraus
  • DESCRIPTION AND SETTINGS : I took this image on my Samsung Galaxy S9 in my front yard, of these two beautiful Giant Swallowtail butterflies, fluttering around a Hong Kong Orchid tree with magnificent magenta blossoms, and a Wild Lime shrub.
  • Judge's Critique: Butterflies are a fun and challenging subject. Keeping the basic fundamentals in mind…the subject/s should fill the frame or at the very least occupy a significant portion of the frame so the viewer knows what the subject is. With a few exceptions, the subject should be moving into the frame. These butterflies are flying out of the frame and one of them is cut off. If this title is about the butterflies flying free of the frame, it may have been better expressed in a different or tighter composition. The light source (sun) seems to be coming from the upper left portion of the image. The elements in the image seem to be backlit. This works real well with the butterflies but not necessarily with the trees.
