Even to the non-photographer, the look of light through a window is quite recognizable, and as such, it is an excellent way to give your portraits an elegant and timeless look. Of course, we do not always have the ability to just use a window with natural sunlight streaming through, and as such, knowing how to create it in studio is a useful skill. Thankfully, it is not that difficult, nor does it require a lot of equipment. This excellent video tutorial will show you how to do it with just a single speedlight. Most of the time, a worthwhile lens is going to cost you at least several hundred dollars, if not somewhere in the thousands. So, the prospect of a $69 lens is certainly intriguing. Can it produce worthwhile images, though? This excellent video review takes a look at the TTArtisan 50mm f/2 and the kind of performance and image quality you can expect from it in real-world usage. And, of course, it features Lightroom guru (and Adobe evangelist), Mr. Terry White. Check it out: How cool is that!!!! Thanks, Terry! This next video was put together by Adobe… …and it’s about the woman you see below, who used to study architecture and fell in love with photography along the way. There is no sales pitch or anything like that (besides just the words Lightroom and Photoshop briefly in the opening and at the end, but that’s it), but man – this is just so well done from beginning to end. It’s only a minute or so, but I think you’ll really enjoy it. Next week, the HUGE Lightroom online training event kicks off That’s right – next week is the Photoshop...

It might seem to be an easy transition for a photographer to become a filmmaker. At the core of each of these disciplines is storytelling. A photographer tells a story in a single instant captured at the decisive moment, while a filmmaker tells a story over a period of time, often incorporating elements such as editing and sound to help tell that story. The sky is fascinating. Just above our heads is a dynamic river of ever-changing complexity, and somehow nature can take this chaos and create beautiful clouds and weather phenomena—some peaceful and calm, others terrifyingly destructive. A supercell thunderstorm twists its way through the atmosphere, bringing damaging winds and baseball-sized hail to Leoti, Kansas. For the last 22 years, I’ve traveled hundreds of thousands of miles throughout the central United States in search of some of the most violent storms on Earth. This region, known as Tornado Alley, comes to life each spring as warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico interacts with cold dry air from Canada to produce “supercell” thunderstorms and tornadoes. Documenting these storms, I find it incredible...Photo of a nighttime lightning strike in Grand Canyon

I had the fortune to sit down recently with London-based photographer Ivan Weiss, whom I consider one of the great portrait artists of our time. Weiss’ unique body of work has been featured by Canon UK, Affinity Photo, Vogue, BBC, and Forbes, among others, and he also leads the Portrait Track in Peter Hurley’s Headshot Crew, where he mentors other photographers. Our conversation focused on the illusion of originality in art, mentorship, and why you need to “stay on the bus” in order to reach your full potential. You can do a lot in Photoshop. It’s no secret that Photoshop is one of, if not the most powerful photo editing programs in the world. For years, Adobe’s pinnacle program has been the gold standard in photo editing. In the last few years, Photoshop plugins have been on the rise, and there are now thousands of different plugins available for Photoshop. These plugins can do a variety of things, from adding special effects, to removing noise, or even resizing your photo or using AI technology to remove stray hairs from your model. Many plugins allow you to do things to your image that you otherwise can’t do in Photoshop, while others just have an easier, or more effective way to...

Previously, we looked at how the facial recognition function, aka People View, worked in Lightroom Classic. I figured it would be useful to examine how the facial recognition function works in the cloud based Lightroom ecosystem as well. First off, if you sync your Lightroom Classic catalog to the Lightroom cloud you can certainly sync photos, and if those photos contain faces those faces will be analyzed and allow you to assign names to them. However, the people tags (keywords) assigned do not sync between Lightroom Classic and Lightroom. So, if you have photos in both applications, and you want to utilize the face recognition in both, you have to assign names manually in both. That said, if you migrate a...
