Workshops, Field Trips and Newsletter

  Workshops

Julius as well as other well known photographers added to the Club’s rich history by offering diverse photography workshops. Progressive from its inception, some of the topics included Nature Photography, Portraiture, Fashion and Glamour and Nude Photography.

In 1977, Joseph La Fauci, one of the founders of the Professional Photographers Guild of Florida, gave a mini course on "Lighting the Nude in High Key Photography".  According to the Club's  September 1977 newsletter, " La Fauci taught "the techniques necessary to 1) set up backgrounds, 2) establish rapport with models, 3) set up light variations for mood and accentuation 4) reveal shape and texture, 5) create special effects, and 6) pre-visualize final results."

Current member Fred Kong organized a workshop in 1988  on "Boudoir Photography."  It was described in the newsletter as "a hand on (hands off) shooting workshop".

In addition to  diverse topics, workshops were held not only locally but in different parts of the country. In 1987, Julius Sirilo offered Club members  a one week "Photographic Workshop in Picturesque Maine" at Bates College.  In that not so distant past - the price for the workshop was only $285 and included room, breakfast and a box lunch!

A favorite local workshop was taught by Julius Sirilo - "Night Photography - Capturing the Miami Skyline at Sunset".

Field Trips

Field trips to local attractions took the Club to places such as the Homestead Rodeo, Hialeah Park Race Track, the Miccosukee Indian Village and the Everglades, to mention a few. However, this progressive Club did not limit itself to local excursions. Trips to Key West, the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, Mexico and London were counted among its "memorable outings".

In December 1986 the Club's Field Trip committee organized a photography trip to Merida, Mexico. This 3 day event cost $173 per person- including airfare. (What a steal!)

THE NEWSLETTER

The first official Kendall Camera Club newsletter was written in 1977. It was a monthly publication called "Point of View".  It posted messages from the president, up-coming field trips and a workshops along with the monthly Click-tique results.  The newsletter also served as a forum where members could list equipment they looked to buy or sell. Sponsors included Sunset Photo Service, Sir Speedy, Rich Photo and Benson Camera, among others.

In 1981, the newsletter became known as "Focal Point".  In addition to its monthly edition, the Club produced a quarterly magazine that contained articles and photographs from amateur and professional educators. The magazine was distributed in both Dade and Broward counties. Costs were defrayed by the selling of advertising space. A one page ad would cost $400.  A half page on the back cover garnered $450. The quarterly magazine was later discontinued for a more  comprehensive monthly newsletter.

Below, is the front cover of the April 1989 monthly issue of Focal Point - Photograph "Skyward" was taken by Fred Kong.

Newsletter Tidbits:

March 1978: "What a turn out we had at Saul Freiss' program Adventures in wildlife Photography. It was a hit!!"

May 1989:  "Bounce-Flash Technique: Achieving a natural sense of dimension requires the sense of illusion since the actual picture has only 2 dimensions. Direct flash can defeat this illusion by "flattening the scene even more. To avoid this, soften the image by bouncing the flash from a white, flat surface, such as a wall or ceiling."

January 1990: "Expand your horizons. Visit exotic places. You don't have to buy a ticket. Just make a trip to our clubhouse for our February 13th Clicktique."

March 1996:  "Ordinary photographers crave more and better equipment ... but the artist with a camera craves only an hour of fine light.  ... Light is friendly to photographers who are patient - unknown to those who hurry."

October 1996: Editor's Corner - "Am I having fun yet with Focal Point? Yes ... Last month I gave credit on the cover to the wrong photographer ... Few  noticed that every page had the wrong month on the header.  Now, how am I going to enjoy my mistakes if nobody notices them?"

By the way ...

The Club's annual fee in the 1980's and 1990's ... was $20 per person and $5 for an additional family member.
