  • DESCRIPTION AND SETTINGS : As the title says this was taken at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve which is located in the San Luis Valley in south central Colorado. The magnificent sand dunes are formed by the winds picking up individual grains of sand and depositing them at the north end of the valley. That is Medano Creek at the base of the sand dunes. We visited there in late May, and that morning the dunes and surrounding Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) mountains had gotten a nice dusting of snow. By mid afternoon the snow on the dunes had all melted. We spent the day hiking over the dunes and frolicking in the shallow sandy Medano Creek. https://www.nps.gov/grsa/planyourvisit/medano-creek.htm. What I like about the image is the five elements of brush, creek, dunes, mountains and clouds. The fresh snow was yet another welcome bonus.
  • Judge's Critique: It is tough getting a great photo in midday light. This image reminds me of a been-there-done-that vacation photo. See the side-by-side visual critique for processing ideas. Notice where elements close to the edge were cleaned up and how contrast was added to enhance the feeling of depth?
