I have spent more time than usual trying to photograph "our" hummingbirds this year. This shot made me laugh when I looked at it enlarged. It seems this little guy has had enough of my presence!
Judge's Critique:
Not your Typical Hummingbird Shot: You are right; this is not your typical hummingbird shot. It almost looks like he is sticking his tongue out at you too. I'm not going to do a visual critique, but here are a few observations: Good catch light and focus on the eye, excellent background bokeh, the light seems harsh, the flowers look a little over-saturated a few petals have hot spots. Dropping the exposure back by a stop or more would have added contrast and saturation in-camera, so it may not have been needed post-processing, and it would have helped with the harsh light and darkened the background.
