DESCRIPTION AND SETTINGS :
Setting: 1.0 second, f/4.5, 12mm, ISO, 100. This glass with a lid was backlit with a small LED flashlight. Post-processing adjustments were made in Lightroom. A Black and White Landscape preset was used. The white clipping was also adjusted. A tripod was used. A black backdrop was also used to isolate the subject. I enjoyed the challenge of learning what low key photography was and how to set it up and shoot it. I thought the shadows created by the beveled glass were interesting.
Judge's Critique:
The image meets the challenge of low-key. This an interesting play of light and dark. The jar is off center. Due to the feeling of balance and symmetry, it may have created a stronger image if the jar was in the horizontal center of the image. A square crop may have also reinforced the feeling of balance and symmetry. The challenge was achieved, but while this may be an interesting still life image, it does not rise to the level of a competition photograph.
