dPS Weekly Photo Challenge – Burnt

The post dPS Weekly Photo Challenge – Burnt appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime. Here’s a potentially interesting theme for week two of our weekly photographic challenges! I was thinking back to Christmas ‘pre-Covid’ and the bushfires that we had here in Australia. Actually, my little brother stayed yesterday and we were talking about the amazing massive gum trees that were still burnt, black and charred, along the drive around the coast between Sydney and Melbourne, and I was looking through some old drone footage of mine and ‘burnt’ popped into my head for a theme. (So there you have it, that’s how I come up with themes!) Use the hashtags #dPSWeeklyChallenge and #dPSBurntPhoto in your...

A Look at the Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.8 Lens

A quality 50mm lens is one of the most flexible optics a photographer can have in their kit, with the ability to tackle just about everything from portraits to events, street photography, and much more. Such lenses can cost anywhere from under $100 to well over $2,000, which makes the Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.8, which sits at $379, a nice middle-of-the-road option that offers you higher levels of performance and image quality without breaking into stratospheric price levels. This great video review takes a look at the lens and the sort of performance and image quality you can expect from it in practice. [ Read More ]Original link(Originally posted by Alex Cooke)

Sigma Launches the 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 for E-Mount and L-Mount

The post Sigma Launches the 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 for E-Mount and L-Mount appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Jaymes Dempsey. Earlier this week, Sigma announced a super-telephoto zoom for E-mount and L-mount cameras: the 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports.  While Sigma has long offered a 60-600mm model for Nikon F-mount and Canon EF-mount cameras, the new lens will give Sony, Leica, Sigma, and even some Panasonic users the power to shoot at 60mm, 600mm, and anywhere in between without changing lenses. It also boasts an upgraded autofocus motor and enhanced image stabilization compared to the old DSLR model, which should only add to the lens’s appeal. Superzooms tend to struggle with sharpness and other aberrations, especially...

Is This the New Holy Trinity of Zoom Lenses?

The holy trinity of zoom lenses is traditionally considered an ultra-wide angle zoom (like a 14-24mm f/2.8), a standard zoom (24-70mm f/2.8), and a telephoto zoom (70-200mm f/2.8), so named because they can competently cover the majority of situations a photographer will encounter. However, since that term was coined years ago, the lens and camera market has changed significantly. Is there a new and better holy trinity of zooms? This great video makes a case for one. Last Frame: Traffic Control Cub

Photo By Pam Dorner “I spent a week exploring Grand Teton National Park in late spring,” explains Pam Dorner. “I was fortunate to be able to photograph the most famous brown bear mother in the world, Bear 399, with her four cubs. “In this image taken near the Jackson Lake Dam, one of her grizzly cubs was having fun playing with traffic cones. Many bears in the area are ‘roadside’ bears and have learned to use the roads to traverse the park. This is a good reminder to slow down while driving through our national parks, as wildlife can cross the road at any moment.” See more of Pam Dorner’s work at pam-dorner.smugmug.com. Covering the Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge

I’ve been covering the Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge like clockwork for well over a decade now, and I think it’s fair to say that I’ve picked up a few useful habits along the way. For those unfamiliar with the event, imagine several hundred folks in various stages of near-nudity packed into a corner of the beach. It’s typically rather cold - though some years have been colder than others - and everyone’s working themselves up into a fevered lather. In this excitement, a drum team forms up, creating a corridor from the top of the beach to the ocean. As the sound of those instruments gets louder and faster and more aggressive, the signal is sounded and the mob stampedes...
