Photo By Dawn Wilson “I found this brown pelican waking on a cloudy, cold morning—especially for southern Louisiana—after a shower passed over the area earlier that morning,” explains Dawn Wilson. “There’s a series of pilings along a canal near Lake Pontchartrain where pelicans and other coastal birds rest each evening. The morning can be a great time to catch the birds stirring before they head out to the lake to fish. This particular morning was December 30, 2020, when the world was still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic. This bird’s very vigorous shake caused his wings to shrug and made me think he asked, ‘What will 2021 be like?’” See more of Dawn Wilson’s work at dawnwilsonphotography.com. Nikon D4S, AF-S NIKKOR...

The shutter duration was 30 seconds. I used a flashlight throughout the entire exposure to add light to the main elements. This week’s tip was conceived while driving through the mountains and listening to Deep Tracks on satellite radio. The sound of a lone cowbell filled the air, which was immediately followed by a fuzz guitar accompanied by a lead guitar. A huge smile filled my face as I immediately knew the iconic tune. It had been a long time since hearing “Time.” I immediately sang along while I thought about the concept of time regarding shutter speeds and how they impact the end result of a photo. If you know the lyric, sing along…… “Now the time has come, there...

Welcome to the second installment of my “Retouching Portraits in Lightroom” column. Last time, I talked about how to remove blemishes, which is a perfect lead-up to what we’re going to do this time because you’d use those blemish-removal techniques before you do the skin-softening technique we’re going to learn today. One of the best things about applying this skin-softening technique is that it smooths the gradation of skin tones on your subject’s face, so don’t just think of it as a skin smoother; it’s for a better transition between skin tones, and it makes a huge difference (as you’ll see). The post RAW Landscape Photography: 5 Reasons to Shoot Landscapes in RAW appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Barry J Brady. When I first started out in photography, I was told that shooting in RAW was a waste of time. “You won’t need all that information. Shoot in JPEG; it’ll save space.” Unfortunately, that advice, while well-intentioned, wasn’t right for me – and it probably isn’t right for you, either. Yes, it’s true: JPEGs are far smaller than RAW files (and they require less post-processing work, too). But RAW files come with several outstanding advantages that are especially valuable to landscape photographers. In fact, if you’re a landscape photographer and you’re not shooting in RAW, I encourage...RAW landscape photography
