The post Weekly Photo Challenge – Old appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime. The theme this week was going to be ‘Cold’ but then I thought of all the people in snow&ice I’ve seen online this week and thought no, they’re likely quite done with ‘cold’ and then I realised I’d missed the C and thought I’d stick with ‘Old’ An old scene, an old object like some of my tools, below, or an old person’s portrait even? (And if any of you young people find and post a photo of me, there’s gonna be trouble haha!) This Week Your Challenge Theme is #dPSOld With the theme #dPSOld some things you can think about when you’re...Weekly Photo Challenge – Old

In this case, our subject has a trademark mole just to the right of her chin. Should you remove it, or… This is a tricky retouching question I get asked a lot (the question is tricky, not the technique itself, which is simple), and the question is: “When I’m retouching a portrait, and the subject has a very prominent mole or scar, should I remove it?” This is tricky because in still photos, facial blemishes and moles and such don’t just stand out, they’re exaggerated, but if you remove them, then not only are you removing something that is part of their facial character, you run the risk of people who know the subject realizing that the image been retouched (and...

The post The Pentax K-3 Mark III Will Not Launch Next Week appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Jaymes Dempsey. The Pentax K-3 Mark III will not launch at next week’s CP+ imaging show as was initially promised, but will instead be delayed for the foreseeable future. Back in October 2020, Pentax officially announced its long-awaited APS-C DSLR, the K-3 Mark III. The company released a camera spec list, and stated that “the launch target is around the period of the CP+ camera exhibition, which will be held from February 25 to 28 in 2021.” But now, just days before the CP+ exhibition, Pentax released a statement acknowledging a hold-up; specifically, “some of the product parts are...

I think it is safe to say that the majority of people using Lightroom Classic (LrC) have access to Adobe Bridge as well. After all, if you have the Creative Cloud Photography plan subscription to get access to Photoshop and LrC, then you get Bridge as part of the deal. Now, the safe advice to all new LrC users is to simply not ever use Bridge, and it is true that not using Bridge will help avoid the self-inflicted injury that can come from moving folders and photos around outside of LrC. However, I think that it is possible to be made aware of the potential pitfalls of using Bridge and LrC so that you can avoid them while also adding...

Avalanche for Mac is an interesting product for Mac photographers, and it has one function: to get your images out of one application catalog into another. With all the changes in photo applications, it's easy to switch to something that seems more useful, but often, the catalogs don't come along with your move. As catalogs embed more and more editing metadata, it gets even harder. [ Read More ]Original linkOriginal author: Mel Martin
The post Black and White Still Life Photography: How to Do It (And Why It Matters) appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Rick Ohnsman. In the quest to improve your photography, sometimes the best approach is to slow down, concentrate on the basics, and be purposeful and deliberate. Working in black and white will do that. Making still life images will do that. Combine the two, and you get black and white still life photography – which is an excellent way to make some great images and become a better photographer while you’re at it. One of my most successful images of all time is this very minimalistic monochrome composition. It taps into the power of black...black and white still life of an hourglass

Photo By David Connel Today’s Photo Of The Day is “Bugaboo Splendor” by David Connel. Location: Bugaboo Provincial Park, British Columbia. “My climbing buddy and I climbed Pigeon Spire in Bugaboo Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada,” explains Connel. “I debated about bringing my DSLR camera, not wanting to haul the extra weight up the peak. Since I did bring the camera with me, I spent the whole climb looking for that unique perspective to capture the drama of climbing and the rugged beauty of the mountains. When we got to a saddle, I knew immediately that this was the image I wanted. If you look very closely, you can see my climbing buddy in a red jacket on the ridge....

The post How to Create Cool Effects Using Displacement Maps in Affinity Photo appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Kevin Landwer-Johan. Adding natural-looking text to a photo can be challenging. But with displacement maps in Affinity Photo, you can easily produce awesome-looking text blends. In fact, it takes just a few clicks to merge text with a second photo, so that it looks like the text was there all along. There are a couple of different ways to achieve this look in Affinity Photo. If you’re used to other image manipulation software, you may be familiar with some of the steps. And if you’re new to Affinity Photo, you may not be aware of the features that make...Blend overlay example of displacement maps in Affinity

A lot of photographers like to use a shallow depth of field for portraiture; however, if you are lighting your subject with flash, you will be limited by the flash sync speed of your camera. There are ways around this, however: high-speed sync and ND filters. Both come with their own pros and cons, and this excellent video discusses which is better for your work. A cold wind blows down from the North, and every breath falls to your feet in a puff of condensation. You press your frozen fingers into a set of animal tracks, and they come away wet with snow. The tracks are fresh—the animal likely passed through here only minutes ago. You follow the tracks up the riverbank and listen. The river trickles musically beneath the ice, and the wind whispers gently between the frozen pines. Nothing else stirs. You can’t remember the last time your feet were this cold. A bull moose pauses in a snow-covered creek bed. Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III, M.ZUIKO ED 300mm F4.0 IS PRO. Exposure: 1/640 sec., ƒ/4, ISO 250. And then it happens.
