Canon's RF lens lineup has been filling up rapidly with both standard choices and more extreme designs, but there are still some notable absences, particularly in the supertelephoto range. That will surely change eventually, and it seems we're on the way to that, as multiple patents have emerged with some innovative and versatile designs. When you are creating a lighting setup for a portrait, you probably approach it from the standpoint of adding lights and modifiers until you get the result you want. However, while adding light is, of course, important, it is also crucial to know where to take it away. This is where the idea of negative fill comes in. However, negative fill can sometimes be misunderstood. This great video tutorial will show you how negative fill really works and how to use it for your portrait work. I find that the “out of the box” (so to speak) settings in Lightroom Classic’s preferences are a good place to start, but there are a few settings I find helpful to tweak. To access the preferences, go to Lightroom Classic > Preferences (PC: Edit > Preferences). The first tab up is General. One setting here I’ve written about before is the Default Catalog, but beyond that I also prefer to check the Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos. I don’t often shoot Raw+JPG these days, but sometimes when testing a new camera (or getting a new camera) I do this to compare the JPG vs raw as well as to allow importing the JPG until the...

You’ll get many opportunities to photograph someone for free or to offer you work for less. You don’t have to take all of them or even any of them. As a successful photographer, you’ll need to learn to say "no" more often than "yes" and how your career development depends on saying "no" to the wrong people. This blog post will guide you through the different scenarios and how to protect yourself. [ Read More ]Original link(Originally posted by Walid Azami)
50mm lenses are some of the most popular and versatile options out there, able to tackle a wide range of scenarios with ease. They are available at prices ranging from below $100 to well over $2,000. At $598, the Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G sits in the middle of all that. So, does it offer premium image quality and performance for that mid-range price? This excellent video review takes a look at the 50mm f/2.5 to answer that question. [ Read More ]Original link(Originally posted by Alex Cooke)
The post The 9 Best External Hard Drives for Photographers appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Simon Ringsmuth. When it comes to storing or backing up your photos, the search for the best external hard drive can seem positively overwhelming. There are hundreds of options available in all shapes and sizes, from SSDs to traditional hard disks to network-attached backups. When I travel, I stay in each location I visit for several days to increase my chances of encountering great light. But even a week is sometimes not enough to get a single colorful sunrise or sunset. Either the sky remains free of clouds or it's completely overcast, preventing any interesting light from breaking through. Night photography is one way of dealing with a clear sky. But what can you do during gray weather? [ Read More ]Original link(Originally posted by Michael Breitung)
“Longs Peak from Bear Lake in Autumn” Many photographers who like shooting landscapes dream of selling prints someday. If that includes you, then you face a challenge: identifying which images will sell. It’s not as easy as it sounds. I often wrap up my longer landscape photography workshops by playing a game with students that I call “Flops Versus Bestsellers.” I show the students 16 images. Eight were bestsellers, with more than 100 prints sold. Eight bombed, with less than 10 prints sold. The students’ task is to analyze each image and decide if it soared or cratered. The game seems trivial; surely, it will be obvious whether an image was a bestseller or a dud. It turns out that the...Photo of Maroon Peak from West Maroon Basin

With the release of cameras like the EOS R7 and EOS R10, Canon has shown they are interested in developing APS-C mirrorless cameras alongside their full frame mirrorless line. In tandem with that, we have seen the introduction of RF-S lenses specifically designed for the APS-C format. This excellent video review takes a look at one such lens, the Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, and the sort of performance and image quality you can expect from it in practice.
