Many people are surprised to learn that in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of northern Virginia, just 17 miles from Washington, D.C., a National Park Service site sits nestled along the Potomac River. Great Falls Park is an 800-acre natural oasis that offers views of the mighty Potomac River as it crashes over jagged rock formations. Location: Ricketts Glen State Park, Pennsylvania. “Ricketts Glen State Park in northeastern Pennsylvania features more than 20 waterfalls along steep hiking trails,” explains Sisson. “The trails are open three seasons, but during the winter they’re closed except for hikers with proper ice climbing equipment.
