I shot this image just this past week when I was shooting some images for the online "Light and Shadows" theme. This was a set up done in my front yard. I used a whiteboard for the background. I remembered what Richard Wass was saying recently at one of our competitions about shooting a subject from 9 different angles. That is how I came up with this view of the forks lined up in the sun. I just keep rearranging the forks and I kept shooting. I shot almost 300 images over two days of various objects. I copped this image in LRC and made some other lighting adjustments. I cleaned up the image in PS and added a mat.

Saw this solitary young deer at Sawmill Ponds nature preserve trail near Boulder, CO. The deer was on the run but stood staring back for a couple of seconds behind the wiregrass. This was taken at the Homestead Rodeo. I was shooting in burst mode to capture the fast action. I picked out this frame because the bull is entirely airborne. The dirt is flying off the ground. The bright sunlight adds interest. The colors are vibrant. I also like the look on the cowboy's face to the left of the bull and rider. He looks like he is grimacing in fear of what might be coming his way, an eight-hundred-pound bull.

This is an image of the C-100 canal that runs through southwest Miami-Dade County. I went for a walk early one morning in January and saw that the fog was very thick. That is unusual for Miami. I liked the eerie look to everything in the fog. The image was almost monochrome out of the camera, but I went ahead and made it soft black and white using Lrc software.

This image was shot specifically for this challenge. The three small crochet baskets were made by my wife. I placed them on a wicker basket lid turned upside down. A whiteboard was used for the background. This image was shot in the late afternoon in full sunlight. I thought the repetitive circular patterns added to the composition. There are textures are in all the elements. Post-processing was done with LrC. One small blemish on the whiteboard was removed using PS. It was not intended, but this image vaguely resembles an abstract face.

This was a very tall crane at the Waterfront Park next to Charleston Harbor. I was standing below it so was only focusing on the top part that the lens was able to fit in. There was a driver inside the cab and seemed to be finishing the work. He had just swung the hook into the tower/mast. There were bright colors and an abundance of machinery parts to this tower crane - looked quite new. The photo was shot with a Nikon D5600 using a 300 mm lens at 70mm. Camera was on automatic.

This was taken at the Homestead Rodeo. I was using the burst mode on the camera to capture the moment of peak action. I shot over 1051 images this day. Each burst would take 8 to 15 frames in a few seconds. This image was chosen because of the action of the rider, horse, and calf. There is action everywhere. The calf is totally airborne. The rope is flying through the air. The horse is running a full speed kicking up the sand in the arena. The cowboy has the lariat end in his teeth and is throwing the lasso end with his arm. The lasso is just around the neck of the calf, and it is about to be tightened for the takedown. I was panning when I took this image to freeze the subjects and to blur the people in the grandstands in the background. The live-action is over in mere seconds, but a photograph freezes time so we can study all that is going on in those fleeting action-filled split seconds. The rodeo is a magical place to capture animals and humans in a daredevil ballet of life, possible injury, and maybe even death.

This image was taken at the Homestead Rodeo. I selected this image because of the powerful feeling of the motion of the bucking bronco and rider. I am particularly astonished at the image of the horse's eye and mouth which make it looks like it is in a state of agony and distress. The rider is also grimacing from the torturous ride by trying to stay on the gyrating horse for 8 seconds. The contorted body position of the rider looks agonizing to me. When I look at this image I question the sanity of putting these poor animals through this torture. I also question the sanity of the riders who put their lives and limbs in jeopardy with each ride on the broncos and bulls. I used the burst mode on my camera to capture the peak action of this ride.

This past January there was a very foggy morning. I went out to see what I could find to shoot in the fog. I came across these two cormorants sitting on a pipe going across the C-100 canal. I thought it was interesting that one of the birds had its wings stretched out and the other one didn't. The thick fog gave me a nice clean white background for the blackbirds. From the angle, I made the shot the pipe looked angled. I like the angle look so I left it that way.

This is a pair of old hiking shoes that I normally use for yard work. When I was looking around the garage for something with texture they caught my eye. I played around with them and made various setups. I liked this one the best. The shoelaces were trying to make a statement so I tied them in a bow, and helped them out to make some interesting loop shadows. I thought the diagonal slant to the shoes helped the composition.

This setup was shot out of doors in shade. Post-processing was done in LrC. It was shot with the Olympus E-M5 Mark II at 1/125, f/11, 13mm, ISO 100. Post-processing was done using Lightroom Classic. I had fun playing around with various fruits and vegetables that I found in the refrigerator. I used a card table with a table cloth draped over it for the background. I shot about 125 images the day I was doing this image.

here are six simple machines in physics. They are; lever, wheel and axle, pulley, wedge, inclined plane and screw. My wife says she used to teach this information in third grade curriculum. I picked the pulley for my machinery subject. This is an image of a group of pulleys used in sailing to control the mainsail of a sailboat. They are commonly referred to simply as blocks. I shot this outdoors but in a shadow. I used a large whiteboard as a reflector to light the subject.

Bicycles are human powered machines, and I felt they would fit the theme. The challenge was to show the mechanism that powers the bicycle in an interesting way. A white board was used as a background. The shadow of the sprocket and pedal made for a unique perspective. This was shot in full sunlight.

This image was taken on the bluff above the Pacific Ocean not far from Santa Barbra, California. I like the simplicity of this image. I like the tree framing the person in the image. This was a 1/5 second exposure done using a tripod.

This was shot in Santa Barbara, California. This cow statue is on the roof of a dairy store. The building is adobe-style thus the various levels of the roof. I am guessing that is just a potted plant next to the cow sculpture. I like the way it looks like the cow is turning its head to look at the plant. The sky was overcast which gave a nice muted light. I did processing in LRC and PS.

This is regarding food textures. This is a chicken, polenta & vegetable lunch at a hotel restaurant. There are a variety of different textures on this plate to please the palate from crunchy hard to different levels of soft, to smooth with different levels of firmness.
